Raised in Wichita Falls, Derek’s passion for advocacy began in childhood—watching Matlock reruns with his grandfather sparked a lifelong drive to represent others in court. He earned a History degree with a Pre-Law concentration (magna cum laude) from the University of Texas at Arlington. He then graduated from Baylor Law School in 2011, where he sharpened his courtroom skills through the nationally recognized Practice Court program and served as an Associate Editor of the Baylor Law Review.

With extensive jury trial experience, Derek has achieved results in both plaintiff and defense roles. He secured a $1.9 million jury verdict in a conversion and gross negligence case and has successfully defended oil and gas companies and regional businesses at both the trial and appellate levels.

Derek is active in the legal and local communities, having held leadership roles in the Midland County Bar Association, the State Bar of Texas, and Midland Teen Court. He’s also a recognized voice on mental health and recovery in the legal profession, earning awards for pro bono service and frequently speaking at legal conferences and CLEs. His writing has been featured in Texas Lawyer Magazine, The Texas Bar Journal, and The Advocate.
